Recent Student Accomplishments

Congratulations to Pete Galvan on his first solo flight!!

Pete has put in the work this summer flying late evenings and early mornings working around the 100 plus degree heat and strong winds to finally get his first solo done this morning in his Piper Tri-Pacer! It has felt great to get to teach a proud owner of one of these “flying milk stools” how to fly and seeing the joy he has not only for flying, but these airplanes, too! Let’s keep going and get you your license! Congratulations again, amigo!

Congratulations to Mike on earning his Private Pilot Certificate!

Huge congratulations to the newest pilot in the skies! Michael Authement passed his private pilot check ride today with Dave Goll in Midland!!! Mike has been an incredible student to have and his passion for aviation and determination to succeed was evident in every flight! He always showed up prepared, eager to learn, and with a great attitude that made teaching him how to fly so fun! All while putting up with me picking at him on every lesson!

Congratulations again and enjoy your new pilot certificate!!

Why train with

Curnutt Aviation

Hi! My name is Sam Curnutt and I’m a certified flight instructor in Ft. Stockton, Tx. I have deep roots in Ft. Stockton not only as a fourth generation Pecos County rancher, but also as a pilot in Ft. Stockton. My grandfather, Jerry Puckett, was an accomplished pilot here as well. I grew up listening to his stories of flying all over west Texas and the country and knew it was something that I had to learn how to do as well. I earned my private pilots license in 2014 at 18 years old and have since worked my way up to a commercial single and multi engine-rated pilot and my love of sharing and talking about aviation with anybody who will listen made me want to add my flight instructor rating two years ago and bring flight training back to Ft. Stockton and the surrounding area.

I own and train out of a 1968 Piper Cherokee 180 that also has deep roots in Ft. Stockton. It was bought brand new by the long time pilot, flight instructor, mechanic, and pilot examiner, Bill Hargus, in 1968, and has lived in west Texas ever since. Most any pilot you talk to who learned how to fly in Ft. Stockton has flown N4935L and has some funny or interesting story to tell about it. I am excited to keep this airplane here and to have the opportunity to give many more pilots the chance to learn how to fly in such a great west Texas airplane.

If learning how to fly has been on your bucket list or if you’re already a pilot and want to get current and get back in the air, I would love the opportunity to get to help you with whatever your aviation goals are and to get to share my passion for flying with you!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started with flight training?

The best first step is usually a discovery flight or introductory lesson. It gives you a chance to experience flying, meet your instructor, ask questions, and see whether flight training is the right fit for you.

How long does it take to earn a pilot certificate?

It depends on your schedule, consistency, weather, aircraft availability, and how often you train. Students who fly regularly tend to progress faster and retain more between lessons.

Do I need any experience before starting?

No prior experience is required. Flight training is designed to start with the basics and build from there. Your instructor will walk you through each step, from the first lesson to checkride preparation.

What should I expect on a discovery flight?

A discovery flight is an introductory flight lesson. You will typically meet your instructor, review the basics, take a short flight, and get a feel for what training is like. It is relaxed, beginner-friendly, and designed to help you take the first step.
